James Barr Architecture were approached by a private client to look at this large existing domestic property, located on a prominent corner of the Whitecraigs Conservation Area. The initial brief was to modernise the house and extend the property while maintaining its distinctive Arts and Crafts style.
Following extensive discussions with The Scottish Civic Trust and East Renfrewshire Council Planning Department, a design was developed which complimented the building's strong organic form with asymmetrical detailing, typical of the Scottish Arts and Crafts movement.
Six months later Full Planning Approval and Conservation Area Consent had been granted for a major refurbishment consisting of extensive internal alterations, which increased the accommodation by 50% and undertook a full refurbishment to the exterior which encompassed the entire roof being replaced, repair and treatment of existing roughcast and careful renovation of wooden details and decorative leadwork to windows. The entire front elevation was to be retained and all additions to the property occurring to the rear continued in the same distinctive style.
Due to timescales involved in the completion of this project, it was felt by our client that the construction work should be phased to allow access into the property sooner. This has been accomplished by negotiations with the Planners and a second planning application which Phases the project into two stages. The first stage began in March 2007 and is due for completion in mid August.
